Martinsons on the opportunities and challenges of timber construction

Interest in building with wood remains strong, but the industry is operating in a more challenging environment where decision-making processes, knowledge and collaboration are becoming increasingly important. Martinsons Byggsystem, which develops timber-based structural systems for both residential and large-scale projects, works with these issues on a daily basis. Here, Sales Manager Mikael Lindberg shares his perspective on the current situation and the road ahead.

What has changed the most in how we build with wood in recent years?

– Large-scale timber construction continues to grow steadily. Projects are becoming more numerous, and wood is increasingly considered as an option early on, even in major construction projects.

Where are the biggest challenges today, and how can we overcome them?

– The main challenges are still partly linked to uncertainty and a lack of knowledge among clients. Initiating and working in collaboration at early stages to find the best solutions is an effective way to overcome these barriers.

Martinsons delivers the timber structure for Hitachi Energy’s new office in Västerås

What do you hope visitors will take away after meeting you at Wood Products & Technology?

– We hope visitors gain a better understanding of the opportunities that timber structures offer in modern, sustainable construction, as well as the value of working together from the early stages.

A recent example is Hitachi Energy’s new office in Västerås, where Martinsons is responsible for the timber structure in one of its largest projects to date. The building is constructed using cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam, and is part of a broader investment in research, development and production. The project demonstrates how wood can be used in larger, more complex buildings where sustainability, functionality and collaboration are key.
